Sculptural Elements: Traditional and Technological

Summary: Graduate Thesis submitted to the faculty of the Interactive Design and Game Development Department in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Fine Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design – May 2006:
Much as the traditional sculptor has manipulated, shaped, and controlled the physical materials he selected to create a sculpture, today it is possible to use certain computer applications to create digital sculpture by manipulating, shaping, and controlling the software. Both traditional sculpture and modern three-dimensional sculpture computer applications follow common design fundamentals: space/mass, volume, proportion, form, and surface.
Whether stone or software, chisel or computer, sculptural techniques and technologies must be learned and practiced until mastery is achieved. The five design fundamentals common to both traditional and modern three-dimensional sculpture must be accepted, adopted, adapted, and applied. Whether a traditional sculpture that has survived for ages or a computer created sculpture that can be deleted by the press of a button, whether permanent or transient, there are no short cuts to sculptural success.
